This brand new Dairy and Anaerobic Digester is worth a visit!
The Dairy is part of the 3000 acre Stowell Farms Estate, and is located on the edge of the Village of Pewsey.
The Dairy, when full, will house 500 cows and will provide them with modern state of the art housing, and handling facilities. When up to the full numbers, the cows will be producing approx 5 million litres milk per year. The surrounding land has been sown to grass which will provide the necessary grazing and grass silage.
The cows are milked in an internal rotary parlour, and this process can be viewed from a viewing gallery, which is a fascinating process to watch.
This new development also includes an anaerobic digestion (AD) plant, which is state of the art technology. Cow slurry and maize silage (grown on the Estate) are pumped into the digester tank to generate bacteria which creates the biogas. This is extracted and used to fuel a CHP (combined Heat & Power) unit. The CHP unit drives a generator, producing electricity which is used on site, and sold into the National Grid. The resulting heat from the process is used to heat the farm houses, and we hope will eventually be used to heat the two Pewsey Schools and Leisure centre.
This is a very ‘green’ project and one that will be seen more and more in this country.
